Reduce Blast Delays

A Six Sigma project was initiated to reduce the average time of blast delays in 2007 of 52 minutes by 20% to 41 minutes.  The current projected cost benefit of the project is $379k (annually).

Production blast delays are caused by having to park up equipment to conduct blasting operations.  A blast delay is defined as the time from when production is stopped, until it is started again, for the purposes of blasting.  This impacts production by reducing the amount of available time for equipment to operate.

A team was formed to examine the process specifics, identify opportunities for improvement, establish the root causes for some of the problems associated with daily blasting operations, implement solutions and recommend measures for a sustained performance.

Six Sigma problem solving methodologies and tools were used to deliver continuous business improvement through lean and consistent performance.   The main achievements to date has been improving communication within the business and developing a control plan to ensure improvements are sustained.
