Dragline Productivity Improvement

The goal of this project was to develop strategies to increase production rates through the understanding of downtime issues associated with dragline maintenance days.  It was clear to all by increasing dragline availability; a substantial cost saving and productivity gain could be achieved.

Following the implementation of Six Sigma methodology to the project, a number of root causes for the delays were identified through data analysis.

Root Causes

Improvements

·                      Lack of a Planner/Process owner.

·                      Assign ownership of maintenance service

·                      Poor execution of the plan on the service day.

·                      Modify dragline maintenance personnel org structure to promote improved work practices on the day.

·                      Ineffective communication.

·                      Introduce strategic service planning meetings, (before and after) including all departments involved.

·                     Following realization of the improvements some recognized benefits were achieved,

·                     A reduction in the variance of the service duration times,

·                     A 2.0 hour (13%) reduction per dragline service duration, and

·                     A validated annual cost saving of $728k.
